Metaphor of the Month! In Medias Res Richmond Writing

Metaphor of the Month! In Medias Res Richmond Writing I credit a student in my first-year seminar, The Space Race, for this. Id mentioned the phrase as the way many modern films begin, right in the middle of things, without so much as a credit-roll. This is a handy term for studying narratives, in books or films. Often we feel dropped right in, which can add both confusion and excitement. After class, my student prudently corrected my version, in media res, which I see from time to time. Our metaphor is pure Latin, so the correct case for the second word is medias. The OED lists many Latin phrases, such as  in memoriam   or  in nomine that we still use in certain formal, sacred, or academic settings. Bryan Garners Modern American usage cautions us to check spellings, as  in memoriam  sometimes appears as memorium. Thats incorrect. Heres a usage example. I was teaching Damian Chazelles excellent film  First Man, and a viewers first encounter with Neil Armstrong, in medias res, is in the cockpit of an X-15 rocket plane about to blast into the upper atmosphere. Nothing boring about that! Note that I put the foreign phase weve borrowed into italics. I bow to the wisdom of the post at The Grammarist that does likewise. Our pick this week might be considered just a phrase, not a metaphor, but considering how loosely I hear it employed by learned speakers, Im going to side with its figurative usage, as in There we were,  in medias res,  when he burst in and made things a  shambles. That could mean the interloper burst in early on, came late, or simply appeared, unbidden. One might not be interrupted in the middle to employ our metaphor. Yes, a few of us still drop in a Latin phrase. I love Academia. I cant resist working in old Metaphors of the Month, as I did with shambles just now. Jomo Kenyatta The First President of the Republic of Kenya

Jomo Kenyatta was the first president of the Republic of Kenya. Born in 1889 in Gatundu Kiambu Kenya, Kenyatta he grew to become one of the African prominent independent leaders. Tone is very important in poetry as it plays a role in the way the characters within the poem are portrayed, the way we perceive the writers intentions and it sets the mood when reading the poem. This can clearly be seen with â€Å"mother in a refugee camp† as the poem overall has a very hopeless and harsh tone and this can be seen when the narrator of the poem say, â€Å"She soon would have to forget† in the context that the death of the child is inevitable and they are hopeless as they cannot defy destiny. This is also harsh as the poet does not cover up death with euphemisms but is very straight forward saying that there is no other choice other than to forget. When it comes to describing the mother it becomes a very gentle and caring tone and†¦show more content†¦The pleading tone can be seen in the poem when Dylan Thomas says, â€Å"Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.† This comes as plea to his dad to fight death and not give in and this also emphasizes Dylan Thomas’s desperation for his father to wake up and not give in. On the other hand with â€Å"Remember† the tone develops as you go through the poem and it goes from a commanding tone to one that is accepting towards the end and this can be seen when Christina Rossetti says, â€Å"Better by far you should forget and smile than that you should remember and be sad.† This shows us that the character actually cares about the feelings of the person that loves her as she would rather that they forget and be happy than for them to remember and be sad. This development of tone comes as a natural due to the fact that the nature of the poem is a sonnet. Sonnets tend to convey a problem in the first octave and find the solution to that problem in the last sestet and this can clearly be seen in â€Å"remember† as she is telling them to remember but then she realizes that she cannot hold on to them forever and actually sets them free. As for â€Å"E for L† the poem on a whole is provocative and angry and this can be seen with multiple and ruthless acts of murder that he commits with no mercy at all. These include â€Å"I squash flies against the window† and â€Å"I pour the gold fish down the bog† these acts of murder emphasize how dangerous, psychotic and deluded this person really is. Racism: The Precedent To Slavery In North America Racism: The Precedent to Slavery in North America In tracing the origins of slavery or racism in either sense, one must keep in mind that neither is an event or circumstance that occurred in North America in the 17th through 19th centuries. We must examine slavery as an institution and racism as a mentality defined by the oppressor, independent to the oppressed. Europeans who came to North America in the 17th century were predisposed to the institution of slavery. Slavery had long since been a proactive institution in South America. Africans were also slaves in Europe before 1619. Slave trades that preceded the Trans-Atlantic slave trade also show evidence that there were black slaves in Europe from many centuries. Therefore, Europeans never arrived in the colonies with the thought that slavery was not a natural human institution, or that blacks were equal to them and deserving of rights. The racist views that derived from European's predisposed bias against blacks was a justification the race based slavery that existed in North Ame rican beginning in the 17th century. Whites had a negative proclivity towards blacks in pre-colonial times. In his book, The Write Man's Burden: Historical Origins of Slavery in the United States, Winthrop Jordan describes Europeans reactions towards contact with blacks. However he fails to note that there emphasis on viewing blacks as savage, and heathenish, etc, were the very differences between Europeans and Africans, that would be to Europeans, a justifications for the institution of race based slavery. ?Unquestionably, signs of European prejudice and discrimination toward Indians and Africans had been present in the English colonies from the start. When blacks first arrived in the colonies, their status was of a mixed nature. There were some blacks that worked as indentured servants, some were slaves, and some were free and owned property and laborers of their own. However, history tends to over elaborate this point for some reason or the other. These free blacks were few and their social status was one that was lower than whites. As the population of European indentured servitude began to decrease, there was a need for a stable work force. Africans became the sole labor force for the white English planters. Africans began being associated with the status of slaves. Eventually their children too would inherit this status. This began for man clear and unclear reasons. One reason was that the white legislature in the colonies wanted to stress to those white indentured servants, who began to be unified with blacks, that they were higher in class status than bl acks. ?There is evidence of invidious distinctions between black and white laborers from a relatively early date?. In order to prevent uprisings by the poor white indentured servants; the white legislature stressed the lower class standing of blacks to pacify them. Also, indentured servants were sending correspondence back to their country telling of the hardships of living in American. This brought a decline in indentured servants from Europe. Africans, however, who were too far from home with out any means of contacting their families or anyone, could not tell their countrymen that they were being treated badly. Also, there was no one coming to the aid of Africans; even the Christian church backed the institution. By the early 1700s the status of blacks became property not people. The later 17th century and early 18th century framed the introduction of slave codes bent on controlling the growing slave population. Spirit of St. Louis essays In a Garden City Hotel near Roosevelt Field, there are publicans working on numerous news articles. In a hotel room, Charles Landenberg sleeps delightfully. While in his room trying to fall asleep he thinks about his trip to Paris and he also reminisces about the times of how he used to be an airmail pilot. He thinks about the times when hed always fly in horrible weather. When he tried to fly the plane in bad weather, the plane broke down; therefore, he decides to take the train. There he realizes he want to purchase a plane of his own, which he calls Columbia Airpcraft to sponsor him; however, he were reluctant to help so he called Global Democrat; moreover, they were interested because of his spirit, preservation and motivation. With that spirit, the name of the plane became The Spirit of St. Louis. While building the plane he was informed that 2 other men has died trying to attempt the same thing. It had taken 63 days to finish building the plane; however, when they finish , Charles found out about 2 men whom were from Paris that had passed away while trying to fly over the Atlantic. Even though knowing about the incident, he decides to go to St. Louis anyway to prepare for his flight. His sponsors tries to convince Charles not to fly; however, it seemed impossible. A Character Profile of Romeos Juliet Juliet, from Romeo and Juliet, is the young teenage daughter of Capulet and Lady Capulet. At age 13, Juliet is beautiful, innocent, and at a marriageable age. Before meeting Romeo, Juliet had thought little about love and marriage. Her parents, on the other hand, are keen to marry her to a rich and well-connected husband and have chosen Count Paris, who has expressed his interest in Juliet, as their daughters future husband. Whether Juliet likes him is not a concern to anyone but her. Meeting Romeo Changes Juliets Life However, Juliet soon stumbles upon her ​fate when she meets Romeo and instantly falls in love with him, despite his  being the son of her family’s enemy, Lord Montague. â€Å"My only love sprung from my only hate,† she exclaims. Like many women in Shakespeares plays, Juliet has very little freedom, but she is connected to the outside world through her closest friend, Nurse. Juliet, though, is prepared to abandon Nurse entirely when Nurse turns against Romeo. Juliet matures throughout the plot of the play and is eventually prepared to abandon her family in order to be with Romeo. Juliet, a Complex Character At the beginning of the play, Juliet Capulet appears to be a shy and innocent young girl, but the depth of her character shows as she meets Romeo, defies her father, marries Romeo, and ultimately commits suicide. While appearing quiet and obedient, Juliet displays inner strength, intelligence, bravery,  wit, and independence. It is, in fact, Juliet who asks Romeo to marry her. Juliet dispels the notion of shyness in scenes where she speaks as much as Romeo and with the same degree of confidence. Juliet shows her inner strength and independent nature in her decision to die rather marry Paris: If all else fail, myself have power to die. By so doing, she takes control of her own destiny, rather than allow her life to be controlled by others, as so many young women in her circumstances at that time would. Juliets Quotes of Character Juliets own words demonstrate her strength of character, independence, and growing maturity, especially regarding love. Here are some examples: Well, do not swear. Although I joy in thee,  I have no joy of this contract tonight.  It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden, too like the lightning, which doth cease to be ere one can say It lightens. Hysteria is a very unique and abnormal mental disease. What makes it so interesting is that it causes physical symptoms that someone would not normally experience. “Mental conflicts are unconsciously converted to symptoms that appear to be physical, but for which no organic cause is found';(Hysteria 1). One major outburst of hysteria occurred in 1692, resulting in the deaths of twenty-four innocent lives. “By the time hysteria had spent itself, twenty-four people had died';(TWHSTSV 2). This type of hysteria was mass hysteria, where a group of people are in a frenzy as opposed to just one individual. Evidently, hysteria is a very serious disease and has the potential to cause many avoidable deaths.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Mass hysteria is a frenzy that has the potential to effect an entire community, state or possibly even country or nation. “[It is] a condition where a group of people dash about wildly, screaming and sometimes talking as if another person is in them; experiencing rapid breathing, spasms of extremities or even fainting';(Hayes 1). In some ways, it can be look on as a chain reaction. “It is often caused by new problems that worsen existing difficulties';(TWHSTSV 2). When one person sees another running about wildly and finds out what the cause is, he or she will do the same; until eventually the idea spreads to the entire population. Some problems that cause these are “overly strict regulations, lack of open communication between the authorities and the residents, as well as inadequate healthy recreational outlets';(Hayes 1). All these issues are things that if performed, can help prevent or calm an outbreak of mass hysteria.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the Salem Witch Trials, the “existing difficulties'; that led up to the witchcraft theory were ordinary stresses of seventeenth century life in Massachusetts. These include “a strong belief in the devil, factions among Salem Village fanatics and rivalry with nearby Salem Town, a recent small pox epidemic and the threat of attack by warring tribes';(D’Amario 1). All these issues led to rising fear and suspicion. “Soon prisons were filled with more that 150 men surrounding Salem; their names had been ‘cried out’ by tormented young girls as the cause of their pain. All would await trial for a crime punishable by death, the practice of witchcraft';(D’Amario 1). Many theories exist as to why these girls behaved as they did and caused the witchcraft hysteria. One theory states: “they had eaten bread contaminated with a hallucinogenic fungus';(TWHSTSV 2), which supposedly caused them to act as they did.

The problems in the school life can be solved if teachers and parents work together as a team. â€Å"The traditional concept of involving parents in the process of educating their children has typically been restricted to one-way communication approaches. Either the parent is talking at the teacher or the teacher is talking to the parent. Yet the real purpose of parental involvement in the educational process is to foster an improved learning climate and support system for the child. Parent-teacher confrontation models do little to foster the development of their environments conducive to effective interaction and learning for the child† (Swick, 7). â€Å"parents and teachers must come to realize that their behaviors are much more important than their words in affecting the child’s self-concept. When parents and teachers work in complementary, supportive type roles as partners in the development of learning climates and support systems for young children, not only are they learning, but they are a vital part of the educational process† (Swick, 7). â€Å"†¦ the parent is the first and most important influence in the child’s development. It holds that the parent, like all other teachers,must first be a growing, compassionate person in order to be an effective parent† (Swick, 7). â€Å"Parents and teachers become stronger, more insightful individuals when they participate in joint determination of the educational program in which their children have optimal conditions necessary for growth toward becoming functional and developing persons† (Swick, 8).
